England/Wales To Skipton Sept 22-23, 2011

September 22 - to Skipton

At breakfast the next morning, Tom and Kathy - retired librarians say good-by.  She was a university librarian, and as a child played with Prince Charles at Balmoral Castle where her mother worked.

We follow Chris & Victoria in the newer Porsche on our way to visit Fountains Abbey together

Chris, Victoria and Jean listen to our guide talk about the mill

Ruins of the Abbey, tunnels on the right were built to provide a foundation for expansion of the Abbey

The main sanctuary of the Abbey

Victoria on the right

Chris and Victoria have to leave now to return to Ireland so we say good-by

We continue the tour

After the tour and some lunch, we start our trek through part of the grounds

Tom hikes up to a folly, a small building above the valley water gardens, going through the serpentine tunnel on the right below

The folly is called the Octagon Tower

It's rather dark!

View of the tower from below

Deer photos on our way back to the car

On our way to Bolton Abbey, near Skipton

The east end is in ruins, the west is an abbey church

Fishing on the River Wharfe

We enter the church and get to enjoy a string trio rehearsal

Beautiful light coming through the stained glass windows

September 23

Scenic morning drive up into the Yorkshire Dales

View looking back torward's the village of Arncliffe - far left

Narrow and steep roads

We reach Malham Tarn (lake) and go for a walk around part of the north side

Known for it's birdwatching

The path here is part of the Pennine Way Trail, 268 miles up the Pennine range of mountains

Looks like a boat house on the lake

Mind the nettle at this gate

On our way back

Another gate opening device

We then drive towards Malham

Assisted hiking group

Have our own lunch in Malham

A lot of field trip kids, some are supposed to survey residents about the village but we don't see much of that happening.

North from the village is Janet's Foss

Nearby is Gordale Scar, with a hike up to a waterfall

Old painting of the same view

Back to the car and to Skipton - Jean in the distance

Walking to the laundry where we left our clothes, back yards...

...and fronts of homes.
