England/Wales To Ambleside Sept 24-25, 2011

September 24 - to Ambleside in the Lakes

Morning on the canal at Skipton

Our crowded parking place at Highfield House B & B

We drive to Settle, meet Chris & Victoria's friends, Carol & Neil and follow them to their home up in the Dales for a short visit - we are not far from where we were walking yesterday

On the way we get a glimpse of the Atlantic - the Irish Sea

Next a tour of White Scar Caves

Our part of the tour is the orange line

Nice explanation of the age of the cave, about 200,000 years old

Hard hats which are very helpful due to the low roofs

One of the waterfalls, not a spectacular cave but interesting

The tour mainly goes along a stream, a month or so ago water was pouring out of the entrance

Kids observing some minature horses

A lot of hiking here on this Saturday

Most road projects use lights like this

We arrive at Foxghyll on a narrow road out of Ambleside.
After we return home, we are notified that the couple who drove the silver Porsche visible here, left without paying - on purpose.  We learn another visitor had a photo that showed the license plate.

We are on the second floor, not your usual B & B

We walk into town for dinner

On the way back it's raining - this is the road

Instead of a cubicle, we have a jacuzzi bath...

...and a large bedroom for two nights.

September 25

On our way to breakfast

A long adventure today... we hope to cross Hardknott pass and find a Roman fort

Nice view up towards the pass which we cross.
Tom has a hard time, Jean has the brakes - 25% grade, one lane, few pullover areas.

Another pass to go... Tom is not sure we should continue - added yellow line to show the road

We make it, on the way down, in the distince is the fort

Looking back...

Hardnott Roman fort, what a view!

Looking back from the fort towards the 2nd pass on the right that we came down.
We decide to take the long way around, continue on to Ravenglass where we have lunch at a railway station next to the Irish Sea (Atlantic).

We make it back in time to do a hike up above our B & B to an area called Loughrigg Fell

Gate from the B & B Property

The lake in the distance is Windermere

Small pond had a blooming water lillie
