England/Wales To Pickering Sept 19-21, 2011

September 19 - To Pickering

First we headed to Beverly, intending to visit the Minister (large cathedral) but we first visited St. Mary's Church which was very interesting.  Started in the 11th Century, it suffered a collapse of the tower in 1520 during an Easter service killing 90.

We made a short visit to the Minister, but decided to go on to our next destination, Rudston.
The GPS sent us on some very rural narrow roads - the above a nice view on the way.

In the churchyard above the village of Rudston, is the highest monolith in England, 26 ft.
Estimated to be 4000 years old, located on a hill as are many other ancient monuments.

In the Rudston church cemetary

Next is a vist to Castle Howard, well known for the film and TV series based on the novel "Brideshead Revisited"

Huge grounds, we do some walking but there was much more

The view towards South Lake and the Mausoleum

We mainly explore the walled garden

Veggies!

We settle down for three nights at Kirkham Garth B & B in Kirkham

September 20

We head north towards Whitby, where we plan to meet up with our friends, Chris & Victoria

On the way we drive down into Goathland and Beck Hole, a long series of depressions - view from above

Narrow roads, GPS leading us back to the A169

As we enter the outskirts of Whitby on the coast, we see Dave Matthews is at work here.

We find parking up above Whitby, we are looking at the North Sea.
Colorful houses are rental beach changing rooms.

The ship in the distance is a replica of a Captain Cook ship

Someday, if famous, you too can be a bird perch

We head down to the harbor, the ship returning, Whitby Abbey above the cliff

A steam powered bus for tourists

We receive a call from Chris and Victoria - "our Porsche has broken down, please rescue"

We head back up to the car and look for the Porsche and friends.
Unfortunately, it's Chris & Tom communicating so this takes several attempts to locate them.

Click the picture to see the details if you like!

They were at this roundabout, behind the farm house by the time we found them.
We then take them in our car back to Whitby for sightseeing, eating, and shopping.

Our first meeting with Chris and Victoria happened on an Egypt tour, exactly ten years ago.
We now tour Whitby Abbey up on the cliff.

View from the Abbey towards the town - Chris was born here

Back at the roundabout, another Porsch arrives to replace this one, which will be repaired.
On February 3, 1940 the first German plane to be downed in WWII England crash landed right here behind the farm house.

It was heading East and slid across the farm road between the trees.  One of the three fighter planes that brought down the plane (a light bomber) was piloted by Peter Townsend.
Not the old rock star, but Group Captain Peter Wooldridge Townsend who was best known for ?
 Look him up on Wikipedia.

Photo taken after the crash.

This vehicle not in as bad shape as the bomber, but needs repair.

Curious farm dog watches Victoria arrange luggage.

Good by to this Porsche - temporarily.

Chris and Victoria are staying in Pickering where we are, that's the newer Porsche ahead

We drive through a great sunset.  We have a nice meal together in Pickering.

September 21

Together in the morning we visit Rievaulx Abbey and Museum.

In the museum is a half ton lead ingot, melted down from the roofing of the Abbey to help fund Henry the VIII's rule.  Several ingot's were left and found during excavations.

The sanctuary of the Abbey then...

...and now

Jean and Victoria

Together again

All of us...  We next head for a scenic viewpoint, Sutton Bank

The view from Sutton Bank

A little shopping in Thirsk... where we also quench our thirst and have lunch.  Chris on the left.

We visit St. Mary's church in Lastingham, unusual for it's crypt, it's entrance is in the center isle of the church.  The crypt was part of the A.D. 1078 church which has been through 9 changes.
Sydney Ringer was buried here and paid for a 1879 restoration.  He discovered Ringer's solution that enables isolated organs to be kept functional for long periods.

Kirkham Garth B & B, we have a view from the second floor out the back.

After a terrific rain storm, I took this from our window looking East.

We have a great Chinese meal with Chris and Victoria in Skipton.
